The Silent Service
More than any other weapon, the U.S. Navy’s Silent Service — our submarine force — is, arguably, the primary strategic deterrent to nuclear attack on the United States of America.
This is not to discount the threat from rogue nations or terrorists, determined to attack our nation from within….with, perhaps, a portable nuclear, chemical or biological device. But, for external deterrence, nothing can beat the U.S. Navy’s ballistic-missile submarines. As apposed to attack submarines, their job is to prevent attack.
They are a force of the utmost professionals. Dedicated. Stealthy. Deadly. And, hopefully, will never need be ordered to fire their weapons!
This shows the ballistic-missile submarine USS Maine (SSBN 741) returning to Naval Base Kitsap-Bangor in Washington following a strategic deterrent patrol.
America should sleep better each night, knowing the Silent Service is on patrol, on watch deep below the oceans’ surface.
